Philippines Typhoon Haiyan Poetry and Art

Plea
by Leslie Mellichamp

O singer, sing to me
I know the world’s awry

The hungry children cry

But I bleed warm and near,
And come another dawn
The world will still be here
When home and hearth are gone.

by T. Merrill

Epitaph for a Filipino Child
by Michael R. Burch

I lived as best I could, and then I died.
Be careful where you step: the grave is wide.

Oh, fallen camellias,
if I were you,
I’d leap into the torrent!

― Takaha Shugyo, translated by Michael R. Burch
